Welcome to my corner of the internet!  I’m Beti Spangel, a freelancer and late blooming author who started out wanting to be a cowgirl when I grew up.  Or at least someone would could clean a mean stall.  My childhood was filled with the Frontier Town, Gaslight Village and Storytown USA amusement parks in upstate New York, and summers spent in Lake George.  Now, I enjoy using these places as backdrops for my flash fiction, short stories, and novellas.

My life took a crazy turn in 2015 when, after a lifetime of being an upstate New Yorker, I relocated to southern Mississippi.  Strangely, the relocation has brought my past upstate experiences into clearer focus in my mind.  That and the inevitable march of time (read: I’m over 50) has strengthened my sentimentality for “back when.”  I’ve combined that nostalgia with my desire to tell a story, and look forward to sharing things with you through these posts.

My rock and #1 Fan is my what-did-I-ever-do-to-deserve-him husband, Larry Phillips.  Between the two of us, we have four amazing daughters, all adulting and scattered across the country.  Now, I’m a crazy donkey lady and we are crazy cat people.

My intent through these pages is to impart some nostalgia, odd but not totally useless information, and fun stories to you here, to revisit the lifestyles of the past two centuries through the magic of the short story.

I’m not much of a technical person (as my children can attest to, every time they get an email from me on how to insert concept over my head here), but I’m grateful I have this medium through which to reach out to you all.  My website and blog are a work in progress, so please be patient as we tweak and prod and poke to get things working correctly.  I’d love to hear your comments and/or suggestions, so reach out through Contact Me in the menu above.

Through weekly posts, I hope to entertain and maybe even stoke your own memories.  Thanks for joining me!
